The World Justice Project’s new report, “U.S. Rule of Law Trends and the 2024 Election” contains some sobering findings about Americans’ trust in the electoral system.

WASHINGTON (Sept. 17, 2024) – Over 96% of Democrats and Republicans agree: the rule of law is central to the country’s future, according to a new data report by the World Justice Project.    

As world-class athletes faced off in the packed, flag-waving arenas of the Paris summer Olympics, another global contest was heating up in an understated hotel conference room some 4,000 miles away. Beyond the $100,000 in awards at play, a palpable sense of higher stakes permeated the final round of the World Justice Challenge. 

CHICAGO (Aug. 1, 2024) – The World Justice Project announced the five winners of the World Justice Challenge 2024 during the “Meeting the Challenge: World Justice Project Convening on Democracy and the Rule of Law” event at the annual conference of the American Bar Association in Chicago. The winning projects all support this year’s theme of The Rule of Law: Foundation of Democracy.

How can U.S. bar leaders and lawyers take an active role in addressing the nation’s significant rule of law challenges? That was the topic of a recent 21st Century Lawyer program hosted by the National Conference of Bar Presidents (NCBP) in partnership with the World Justice Project (WJP) Lawyers Defending American Democracy, the Divided Community Project at Ohio State University, and the American Bar Association (ABA).

Last month, in Mexico City’s historic center, a diverse group of state and federal officials took the stage to explore what’s working to improve the rule of law in Mexico. Addressing an audience of policymakers, donors, advocates, and business leaders, the officials discussed progress such as reduced corruption in the state of Sinaloa, safer communities in Chihuahua, greater access to justice in Querétaro, enhanced regulatory enforcement in Sonora, and improved labor protections across the country.

2024 is a pivotal year for democracy, with over 60 countries electing leaders to govern nearly half the world's population. But despite the possibility of record voter turnout, these elections are unfolding amidst a global rule of law recession that is accelerating democratic decline.

Around the world, fundamental human rights have been declining since 2016. Labor rights is the exception. 

Eight years ago, a World Justice Project poll found that an overwhelming majority of Americans–91%–believed they could vote freely without being harassed or pressured. After the 2020 election, only 58% of people still agreed. Will 2024 be different?

Taking cues from the communities resisting these trends can pave the road forward, according to the World Justice Project (WJP) Executive Director Elizabeth Andersen. On March 13, Andersen addressed judicial, legal, and academic leaders at the National Judicial Conference’s symposium on “Democracy’s Last Line of Defense: Preserving an Independent Judiciary.”     

The World Justice Project (WJP) is pleased to announce that WJP Mexico Country Office Director Alejandro González Arreola has been named the global organization’s next Chief Engagement Officer. In his new Washington-D.C.-based role, Alejandro will build, strengthen, and support WJP’s global network of rule of law stakeholders; lead global policy engagement, advocacy initiatives, and campaigns on rule of law topics; and spearhead WJP’s work to advance the rule of law through strategic convenings, including the World Justice Forum.
