Our latest research on U.S. rule of law points to a crisis of confidence. Trust in U.S. institutions is falling. American views on fair elections and justice are highly polarized. And doubts about election legitimacy could undermine a stable 2024 electoral process.

On the bright side, our nationally representative survey of 1,046 U.S. households shows that almost all Americans recognize the importance of the rule of law. Large majorities continue to express strong personal rule of law values. And millions have faith in the election and justice officials central to the upcoming election.
