Following law studies in Germany and France, Achim Johannsen joined the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in 1997. He served in BMZ’s multilateral department, managed an NGO project in South Sudan (2000-2002), and worked at the Federation of German Industries to promote development-oriented private investments (2006-2008). From 2010 to 2015 he served as Head of Development Cooperation at the German Embassies in Uganda and Burundi, and from 2015 to July 2020, he was coordinating budget planning and Africa projects of BMZ’s Special Initiative on Forced Displacement. In September 2020, Achim Johannsen joined the BMZ Governance Division. As Deputy Head of this Division, he is in charge of BMZ activities promoting rule of law, democracy, and decentralization.
