Joanna van der Merwe is the Data Protection Officer at Leiden University’s Centre for Innovation. In this role she explored the interconnection of technological innovation and the implications for data responsibility, including but not limited to, how frameworks such as GDPR apply to new technologies. Her previous experience included the Netherlands Ministry of Defence, working with the Land Warfare Centre to explore the implications of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data for future conflicts. She has also worked on Early Warning Systems for Mass Atrocities at the Signal Program on Human Security and Technology at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative.
