Denitsa Lyubenova is a lawyer and human rights defender. She graduated Law from the University of National and World Economy and specialized in Public International Law at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. Denitsa has many years of experience and expertise in LGBTI cases for: recognition of marriage concluded abroad, recognition of birth certificates of children of same-sex couples issued abroad, cases for change of the legal gender of trans and intersex people and other cases of discrimination against LGBTI persons. Denitsa has numerous cases pending before the European Court of Human Rights The most recent case concerns the issuance of a Bulgarian birth certificate and citizenship to a child born into a same-sex family, which is heard by the highest instance - Grand Chamber of the Court of Justice (C-490/20). Denitsa Lyubenova is a guest lecturer at the Human Rights campus of the Council of Europe University in Venice, Italy. She has written numerous legal research articles and books which include: “Monitoring of the implementation of Committee of Ministers’ recommendation CM/REC (2010)5 on Measures to Combat Discrimation; “Free movement of EU citizens – rights and challenges for same-sex families in Bulgaria”; Study on the rights of same-sex couples in Bulgaria.
