2013 Opportunity Fund Winners

The World Justice Project’s seed-grant competition, the Roderick B. Mathews Opportunity Fund®, is designed to help incubate practical programs that strengthen the rule of law. Since its launch in 2008, the Opportunity Fund has provided over $1,000,000 in financial, research and networking support to innovators operating on five continents, from food security to health care to governance. These programs—led by artists, scientists, designers, business leaders and other social innovators—are showing how the rule of law can address some of the world’s most challenging issues.

In 2012-2013, the WJP expanded the Opportunity Fund into a global, online competition reaching all corners of the world. Applicants used the WJP’s Rule of Law Index to identify areas where the rule of law was weak in their countries and communities and could be strengthened. Twelve winners were selected, representing some of the most innovative social justice efforts underway around the world. Over the coming year, the WJP will help to incubate and support these programs by providing seed funds, enhanced visibility and introductions through its global network of government, civil society, academic and business leaders.
