Transparency Ranking on COVID-19 Responses: Engaging the public and civil society in monitoring government actions

The Approach
With the COVID-19 pandemic, corruption cases reached public procurement and even the acquisition of vaccines in Brazil. The Transparency Ranking on Responses to COVID-19 was a pioneering effort to foster positive competition and reinforce the role of civil society, boosted by special mechanisms allowing the public to engage in online platforms and pressure authorities. With the high level of repercussions attained by this initiative, public authorities were held accountable and effectively had to improve their transparency practices and mechanisms: 92% of the evaluated governments sought TI Brazil for recommendations and consultations on how to promote improvements to their government portals.
