The World Justice Project (WJP) is committed to providing a safe, productive, and welcoming environment free from harassment, discrimination, threats, and disrespectful behavior. This includes all WJP events and gatherings, including on digital platforms and in person, where we seek to create a respectful, friendly, and enjoyable experience for participants. All participants at WJP events, including, but not limited to, attendees, speakers, volunteers, exhibitors, WJP staff and representatives, service providers, and others, are expected to abide by this Code of Conduct for Events (“Code of Conduct”).

The WJP has a zero-tolerance policy for harassment and retaliation and is committed to enforcing this policy at all WJP events. The WJP expects participants to uphold the principles of this Code of Conduct during all aspects of an event, including while inside event venues, during event-related social activities, when participating in online message boards and communication platforms, while attending virtual discussions, and in social media posts related to an event. The WJP reserves the right to refuse admittance to or remove any person from a WJP event. Participants who violate these rules may be expelled from an event without a refund at the sole discretion of the WJP.

Harassment Defined

Harassment includes all actions or comments that are reasonably experienced as intimidating, harassing, abusive, derogatory, demeaning, or consistently marginalizing. Harassment also includes unwanted touching, unwanted or harassing photography and recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, and the real or implied threat of physical harm. Harassment is uniquely harmful when actions or comments are related to actual or perceived sex, gender identity, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, socioeconomic status, age, religion, national origin, legal status, criminal record, veteran status, or their intersection. Harassment based on gender, which has the effect of making someone feel demeaned or marking them as different in a negative way on the basis of their gender, can constitute discrimination because of sex and can, but need not, also include sexual harassment as defined below.

Sexual harassment includes any unwelcome conduct, comment, gesture, or contact of a sexual nature, whether on a one-time basis or in a continuous series of incidents that might reasonably be expected to offend or embarrass an individual or make an individual feel uncomfortable or unsafe. Sexual harassment also includes any unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and unwelcome electronic communication of a sexual nature, regardless of the gender of the complainant.

Reporting Code of Conduct Violations

Harassment and other code of conduct violations reduce the value of our event for everyone.Participants who witness or experience inappropriate conduct, including but not limited to the prohibited conduct described above, should report the incident to a member of the WJP team as soon as possible.

  • Virtual Events: Virtual event participants should report possible Code of Conduct violations by sending a private message directly to the event host or another WJP representative in attendance using the private message feature of the meeting platform. Virtual participants may also send an email to the WJP event coordinator after the event.
  • In-Person Events: In-person event participants should report possible Code of Conduct violations to any member of WJP event staff (who can be identified by their staff name badge). The WJP also designates an on-site Code of Conduct Liaison who can be asked to assist with any issues related to this policy. Participants may contact the Liaison directly via email using the contact information included in event materials or ask a member of WJP event staff to contact the Liaison on their behalf. Please note that participants in need of urgent help should speak to a member of WJP event staff in person to ensure that they receive assistance in a timely manner.

All reports will be treated seriously and be investigated to determine the code of conduct violation and the most appropriate response. Confidentiality will be honored to the extent possible as long as the rights of others are not compromised.

Consequences of Code of Conduct Violations

Individuals asked to stop any behavior in violation of this Code of Conduct are expected to comply immediately. The WJP, in its sole discretion, retains the right to take any action it deems necessary to keep the event a welcoming environment for all participants, which may include, but is not limited to:

  • Issuing a verbal or written warning to cease a behavior that violates this Code of Conduct and retaining a record of that warning in case of future violations;
  • Expulsion from the WJP event without warning or refund;
  • Implementation of conditions upon attendance at future WJP events;
  • Restriction from attendance at future WJP events;
  • Restriction from speaking at future WJP events; and
  • Reporting the details of the incident to relevant authorities, including as required by local laws.

Retaliation

Retaliation against an individual for reporting a perceived violation of this Code of Conduct or for participating in an investigation of a claim of harassment is a serious violation and is strictly prohibited. Acts of retaliation should be reported immediately to a representative of the WJP.
