A look around the world at the latest rule of law events taking place in September:

New round of Kosovo Dialogue

A new round of  talks between the Republic of Serbia and the partially recognised Republic of Kosovo will take place on September 8th, 2013. The Belgrade - Pristina negotiations began in March 2011, and they are the first negotiations between the two entities since Kosovo declared independence. The G20 Leaders' Summit

The G20 Leaders' Summit, to be held in St. Petersburg on September 5-6, 2013, will be the main G20 event of 2013. The key objective of the G20 is fostering strong, sustainable and balanced growth. As this year's chair, Russia has set aside a number of tasks for the G20 to promote economic growth and create jobs, through encouraging long-term investment, ensuring trust and transparency at the markets and enhancing effective regulation. 24th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva

The Human Rights Council will hold its twenty-fourth regular session from 9 to 27 September 2013 in Geneva, where it will hear presentations from human rights experts on the human rights of children whose parents have been given the death penalty or executed; gender integration; and human rights and indigenous peoples. The presentation of the latest report of the Commission of Inquiry on Syria and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea will also be heard by the 47-member body of the Council. 68th Session of the UN General Assembly

The sixty-eighth session of the United Nations General Assembly will open on 17 September 2013, where Ambassador John William Ashe of Antigua and Barbuda will open the debate as the President of its 68th session. The General Debate of General Assembly will be held from 24 September to 2 October, 2013. Click here for more information. 

Elections:

Australia will hold its Parliamentary elections on September 7.

Maldive will hold its first round of Presidential elections on September 7.

Rwanda will hold its Partliamentary elections from September 16-18.

WJP Documents How Indigenous Mediators Advance People-Centered Justice

As part of a multidimensional project funded by the Canadian Embassy in Mexico, WJP has produced a new report that seeks to increase the visibility of Indigenous mediation programs. It comes as a growing number of governments, donors, and communities are embracing a paradigm shift to people-centered justice. That global movement prioritizes identifying people’s legal needs and fostering accessible solutions to address them, rather than primarily investing in established institutions that are missing the mark.

Democracy’s Last Line of Defense: Preserving an Independent Judiciary

Authoritarianism and weakened justice systems continue to erode the rule of law globally–but not universally. Taking cues from the communities resisting these trends can pave the road forward, according to the World Justice Project (WJP) Executive Director Elizabeth Andersen. On March 13, Andersen addressed judicial, legal, and academic leaders at the National Judicial Conference’s symposium on “Democracy’s Last Line of Defense: Preserving an Independent Judiciary.”
